How We Made Our Best VPN for Multiple Devices List

When looking for a VPN for multiple devices, there are certain features you need to pay attention to. While a lot of them are similar to those that make the overall best VPN, there are some specifics, given that the service will be used on more than one device. Read on to learn what we took into consideration.

Connection Speed

No one enjoys a slow connection which is why we started with the feature that more than anything distinguishes the best VPN for multiple devices from mediocre ones — speed. VPNs reroute your traffic via their own private servers, and the wider the network, the fewer users are likely to be linked to each server at the same time. You’ll benefit from this reduced load because you’ll then be able to have faster speed. Since distance affects connection speed as well, we choose VPN providers with over 1,000 servers around the world, so you’ll be more likely to find one that’s closer to you.

Number of Connected Devices

Although most VPN providers have a cap on the number of devices you can connect, we ensured that all of the VPN providers we’ve listed above offer five or more VPN multiple connections. Regardless of whether you own a small or medium-sized business, or you use multiple devices at home, the best VPN for multiple devices should be able to offer enough secure connections.

Security

Since security is the primary reason for a VPN’s existence, it goes without saying that this was a major factor we considered. We were on the lookout for features that contribute to your security such as a no-logging policy, kill switch, and IP hiding. These features go a long way toward ensuring that you have a trouble-free VPN experience. We also ensured that the VPN can be used safely within countries where the internet is censored, as well as that it provides a private DNS and leak protection feature.

Features

The VPN industry is a highly competitive one, and to stand out and be considered the best multi-device VPN, companies are updating their feature catalog all the time. We tried to list as many features as possible, but we’ve concentrated on the ones we believe are the most important and reflect the service’s value. In our evaluation, we made sure to include VPN providers that offer reliable encryption and P2P functionality, in addition to the security features listed above.

Support

While you don’t need to be a computer whiz to use a VPN, the various settings and configurations can be challenging to navigate. As a result, going for a VPN provider with good customer care is always a good choice. We wanted to make sure that if you encounter a problem, you’ll get a quick response with a detailed walkthrough on how to solve the issue.

User Reviews

As part of our search for the best multi-device VPN, we went through as much user feedback and reviews as possible to ensure that our experience matches that of the majority of users. We did not discard a company based on a single negative review, however, but rather, checked how the customer service department addresses problems and unpleasant interactions.

Pricing

We’re well aware that the cost of a VPN is an important factor, especially if you’re debating whether you should use a free one or not. While we also tried to find the best free VPN for multiple devices, we generally looked for providers offering good value for money. We further tried to find vendors that offer discounts for the annual or biennial subscriptions, along with free trials and a money-back guarantee. When the last is not available, however, we would recommend signing up for a short-time subscription to try out the service before committing to a multiple-year subscription.

Reviews of the Best Multiple Devices VPN

1. ExpressVPN

Product Overview

Although the VPN market is large and competitive, ExpressVPN proudly stands out. It is known for its speed and unblocking capabilities, as well as having over 3,000 servers in more than 160 locations. While you can use it on five different devices, if you install it on your router, you have an unlimited number of VPN simultaneous connections

Software Ratings

  • Ease of use 5/5
  • Features 5/5
  • Customer service 4/5
  • Value for money 5/5
  • User reviews 4/5

What Did We Like About ExpressVPN?

One of our favorite things about ExpressVPN is that besides allowing five simultaneous connections, they have a dedicated VPN router app that allows you to connect  VPN with unlimited devices. It is also one of the fastest VPNs thanks to its new protocol: Lightway. You’ll have a strong, reliable connection no matter which server you connect to in the world. Overall, we believe that ExpressVPN is one of the best multi-device VPN services available when it comes to stable, reliable, and user-friendly VPN software.

What Didn’t We Like About ExpressVPN?

Although ExpressVPN has much more pros than cons, we would like to see some things changed. Infecting devices with malware by banner advertising is a common practice. You see an advertisement that offers a product discount or some other attractive reward, you click on it, and you’re taken to a website where malware or a virus will infect your computer. Unfortunately, ExpressVPN does not offer built-in ad and malware blocking, therefore, you’ll have to separately use ad-blocker software.

Another thing we didn’t like is its price. It is more expensive than the majority of its competitors (though not the most expensive VPN) and does not offer a free trial. That said, with the discounts offered on longer subscriptions, the service becomes more affordable, which helped secure it a spot on our best VPN for multiple devices list.

Who Is It For?

ExpressVPN is one of the most well-known VPN providers with a stellar reputation and can be used by anyone, from small businesses to large enterprises, or individuals who simply want to protect their online privacy.

2. CyberGhost

Product Overview

Based in Romania, with over 5,500 servers across 90 countries, CyberGhost most certainly is a great choice for a VPN. It operates outside of all surveillance agencies and while it might not be the best free VPN for multiple devices, it is one of the cheapest. It’s incredibly easy to use, has a strict no-logging policy, and is a great choice for streaming. Their customer support is available in three languages: English, German, and French, and they provide live chat support.

Software Ratings

  • Ease of use 5/5
  • Features 4/5
  • Customer service 4.7/5
  • Value for money 4/5
  • User reviews 4.8/5

What Did We Like About CyberGhost?

CyberGhost stands out courtesy of its affordability and number of simultaneous connections. We liked how inexpensive it is when compared to others on the market offering the same features, especially if you sign up for a year or more. On top of that, it allows connecting up to seven devices simultaneously making it a good budget option for a family or a small business. Its price, 45-day money-back guarantee, and high-quality service make it the best VPN for multiple devices for people on a budget.

We also liked that they have a comprehensive privacy policy clearly stating what no-logs entails, that way, leading you through all the legal jargon you’ll need to be protected. All aspects of your online activities are secure, including your IP address, browsing history, duration, and destination IP address.

What Didn’t We Like About CyberGhost?

We didn’t like that CyberGhost is fast only when used on a local server and slow otherwise. Additionally, it isn’t the fastest gaming VPN, and it might be hard to reliably stream video with the speed CyberGhost has. Overall, despite its large server network, using it for gaming or streaming could cause lag and interruption.

Most Popular CyberGhost Alternatives

  • NordVPN
  • VyprVPN
  • Express VPN

Who Is It For?

CyberGhost is designed for private use by individuals, and businesses of all sizes. We particularly recommend it to small businesses due to its affordability and ability to connect to multiple devices with a single account.

3. NordVPN

Product Overview

With over 5,000 servers in 59 countries, NordVPN is known as one of the best VPN for multiple devices. Since they have so many servers, finding the one that works well is a breeze, and you can rely on it to stream videos or access blocked content. Their VPN uses 256-bit AES encryption, and two types of security protocols: OpenVPN UDP/TCP and IKEv2/IPSec. It also has a double VPN feature, which means your traffic is routed through two servers instead of just one. Since there is more than one line of traffic, it is much more difficult to find you and track your online activity.

Software Ratings

  • Ease of use 4.6/5
  • Features 5/5
  • Customer service 4.5/5
  • Value for money 5/5
  • User reviews 4.6/5

What Did We Like About NordVPN?

What we liked the most about NordVPN is that its headquarters are in Panama, meaning, the local government cannot force the company to give out your data that’s gathered while using their VPN. We’ve also liked their feature CyberSec which can protect you against intrusive ads, malware, and other threats. You can use this  VPN for multiple computers to protect up to six devices with one account or to connect it to your router and protect any device connected to that network.

What Didn’t We Like About NordVPN?

One of our biggest complaints about NordVPN is static IP addresses.  When you use their VPN, you get the same IP address every time. While your specific activity is still difficult to monitor, it is recommended to have a dynamic IP address that changes each time you use the VPN.

We also found the vendor’s one-month pricing plan a bit too expensive, which seems to be par for the course with the best multi-device VPN  services. NordVPN doesn’t offer a free trial either, however, they have discounts for longer subscriptions.

Who Is It For?

This VPN software is a network protection solution designed for companies of all sizes that helps with secure links, private gateways, team control panels, third-party shields, and many more.

4. SurfShark

Product Overview

Based in the British Virgin Islands, SurfShark seems like a perfect choice, since this country’s government doesn’t require any data retention or reporting. SurfShark makes its zero-logging policy very clear. It does not maintain traffic logs and does not collect IP addresses, browsing history, session information, network traffic, and other similar data. By offering unlimited simultaneous connections, SurShark certainly deserves to be on our list of the best multi-device VPN services.

Software Ratings

  • Ease of use 4.5/5
  • Features 5/5
  • Customer service 4/5
  • Value for money 5/5
  • User reviews 4.3/5

What Did We Like About SurfShark?

Since our main criterion was the number of devices that VPN vendors offer connection for, SurfShark has made an unbeatable score on that front. We loved that SurfShark is a VPN for unlimited devices, knowing that most VPNs limit connections to three or five devices.

Another thing that we liked about SurfShark is that it takes privacy very seriously. Many of the standard privacy protections are in operation, including AES-256 encryption and the security protocols OpenVPN UDP and TCP, IKEv2, and WireGuard. These features are definitely something that the best VPN for multiple devices should have.

What Didn’t We Like About SurfShark?

We’ve identified two main issues with SurfShark: static IP address and no native router app. We have already discussed static IP addresses, and although they might be useful if you don’t want to complete a million captcha checks, generally, we do not recommend using them.

Secondly, since SurfShark VPN can be used with an unlimited number of devices, it would be much more convenient to simply install it on your router and secure your devices that way. However, you must manually install it on a router with firmware that requires an OpenVPN or L2TP client. You can also update the firmware, but this is a time-consuming process that can damage your router.

Who Is It For?

SurfShark is perfect for small businesses or mid-sized ones, courtesy of its unlimited devices option.

5. Windscribe

Product Overview

Are you looking for the best free VPN for multiple devices? This is where Windscribe comes in — this Canada-based service quickly rose to prominence thanks to its famous free edition, which attracted a large number of users. Windscribe has a lot to offer, from unlimited simultaneous connections and kill switch, to unlimited bandwidth and DNS leak protection. The premium account grants access to over 42 Netflix libraries, torrenting is permitted on most servers, and Windscribe works well in China and other censored areas.

Software Ratings

  • Ease of use 4.8/5
  • Features 5/5
  • Customer service 4.4/5
  • Value for money 5/5
  • User reviews 4.6/5

What Did We Like About Windscribe?

Most free VPNs don’t offer multiple simultaneous connections on one account, besides Windscribe which is currently the best free VPN for multiple devices on the market. Our favorite thing about Windscribe is its generous free plan. Whether you are subscribing to a paid service or using the free one, you can connect your VPN with unlimited devices with a single account. The majority of VPN services limit you to five or even fewer connections, so if you have a big family or a small business, Windscribe is an excellent choice.

We also appreciate the R.O.B.E.R.T feature, which is an ad-tracker and malware blocker built into custom VPN apps, was especially appealing to us. Windscribe was one of the first VPN providers to offer such a feature, which allows you to choose what you want to block, including advertisements, social networking sites, gambling websites, and more.

What Didn’t We Like About Windscribe?

While it might be the best free VPN for multiple devices, Windscribe could do better on speed. If you’re downloading, torrenting, or just surfing, you’ll need a VPN that can keep up. Inconsistencies in server speeds are Windscribe’s main drawback. Its OpenVPN performance falls short of expectations, while its IKEv2 performance is faster yet inconsistent across locations. It has a decent speed overall, but cannot compete with VPN services such as ExpressVPN and NordVPN.

Most Popular Windscribe Alternatives

  • NordVPN
  • Express VPN
  • ProtonVPN

Who Is It For?

Windscribe is a fantastic personal VPN app with excellent security and efficiency. We would suggest it for companies of all sizes since it allows unlimited connections and is encrypted with the top cipher AES-256. It also uses the OpenVPN protocol, which is a big bonus.

6. Private Internet Access

Product Overview

PIA made it to our list of the best multi-device VPN services because it provides a high level of privacy for a low price, it’s fast, secure, unblocks Netflix, and adheres to a strict no-logging policy. It’s a perfect alternative to NordVPN or CyberGhost for those who are on a budget, yet looking for a VPN that offers a lot of features and more than five VPN simultaneous connections.

Software Ratings

  • Ease of use 4.8/5
  • Features 4.9/5
  • Customer service 3/5
  • Value for money 5/5
  • User reviews 4/5

What Did We Like About Private Internet Access?

The one thing that really surprised us about Private Internet Access is how serious they are about their no-logging policy. Although their headquarters are located in the US, their privacy policy is extremely clear, and they’ve proven that they adhere to it.

While they don’t qualify as the best free VPN for multiple devices, their two-year plan makes them an extremely low-cost alternative. Additionally, they offer various payment options, including credit cards, anonymous payment, gift cards, Bitcoin, and more.

What Didn’t We Like About Private Internet Access?

We found the PIA speed a bit inconsistent, and this can quickly get frustrating when browsing and streaming. PIA averaged 43 Mbps download speed across all locations and times checked, which isn’t nearly as fast as NordVPN or ExpressVPN. Additionally, their streaming options are limited, as PIA only works with Netflix and BBC iPlayer, while Disney Plus, Amazon Prime, Hulu, HBO, Kodi, and Sky are inaccessible.

Another issue that we’ve identified was the vendor’s customer service. Based on hundreds of user reviews that we’ve read, their support seems pretty inconsistent. Some say the response time was fast, while others never received an answer.

Most Popular Private Internet Access Alternatives

  • NordVPN
  • Express VPN
  • CyberGhost

Who Is It For?

Due to its reliable encryption, multiple security protocols, and low prices, it is well suitable for small to mid-sized businesses, however, we wouldn’t recommend it to corporate businesses.

How to Choose the Best Multi-Device VPN  for Your Needs

You might think that choosing the right VPN, but the more you read and research, you’ll realize that there are numerous options. In fact, there are over 300 VPNs on the market now. So, what’s the best way to narrow it down? Check out our step-by-step guide below to find the top VPN for multiple devices for your needs.

Features

Consider the features you need from your VPN service. Will you use it just to stream Netflix from abroad or do you need it to secure your business? The answers to these questions will help you determine the features you need, such as encryption protocol, as well as how much value you put on speed.

Servers

When choosing the best VPN for multiple devices, it’s important to consider the number and location of VPN servers. A vendor with a large number of VPN servers located all over the world will assist you in avoiding traffic bottlenecks that stifle your internet speed. This will also help you circumvent geoblocks for unique content more easily. This is something to consider if you, for example, run a business with employees all over the world.

Centralized Management

This is particularly important if you’re looking for the best VPN for multiple devices for business, rather than personal use. If you’re managing a large team, it is important that the VPN you choose features a centralized management console that lets you control user accounts and access permissions. As the VPN administrator, you need to ensure organizational security by requesting two-factor authentication or set up user logins via third-party platforms. Also, some VPN providers enable administrators to whitelist their organization’s IP addresses to ensure that only users with confirmed addresses can access corporate resources.

Budget

The best VPN for multiple devices is ultimately the one you can afford. Consider how much you can budget for such a service, and make sure to take advantage of any free trials and/or money-back guarantee before you invest in a long-term subscription.
